Gen-Z Opps: Funko loses CMO amid expansion, significant spend increase (Score 56)

Can I take you to less than a year, Ginny McCormick, departed earlier this year for a marketing director position at Amazon. The company's spend rose significantly since McCormick joined, but it is already continuing to do so in her absence. Of course, we will let you know when Funko selects a new CMO.

The company's products are now available in Target stores. Execs in its most recent call noted that the company is approaching this expansion "from a sightly more aggressive marketing angle than we have with some of our more traditional grassroots marketing efforts for the Funko brand in general." The company is also working on driving awareness of its new mobile app, "Snapsies" brand and D2C platforms in general.

The expansion into various retailers makes sense considering how Funko's effort to establish its own brick-and-mortar location in 2019 flopped.

Of course, more aggressive marketing efforts mean higher ad spend; sellers should get in touch soon to secure last-minute ad dollars. The company's digital initiatives are working, so it will continue investing in digital channels.

According to Pathmatics, Funko has already spent roughly $706.8k on digital ads. This has already tripled the roughly $206.4k it allocated in all of 2020. In 2020, Funko's digital ad spend spiked in July, and its estimated full-year 2020 spend ($206.4k) rose by 48% to from that of $139.9k in 2019. The company has earned around 96.9m digital impressions YTD via Facebook (60%), Instagram (37%) and desktop video (4%) ads.

Funko's digital ad spend increase and targeting of Gen-Z will continue throughout 2021, so sellers should get in touch sooner rather than later. To reach this audience, it will likely begin utilizing OTT as well.

Agency & martech readers - We have not heard of any additional roster shifts since Funko ChizComm Beacon Media earlier this year. Your chances will also rise once it selects a new CMO. Thus, I suggest you reach out if you haven't already done so. You'll likely have the best luck securing brand-specific creative, digital analytics, experiential and/or social media management work for Snapsies.
