Gen-Z, Millennial Opps: Shutterfly celebrates 2020's oddness in holiday ad campaign (Score 74)


In its new holiday campaign, Argonaut, with which they started working in 2019, "Let Good Fly" rolled out across cable and connected TV (CTV); it also includes content via online, radio and social media channels.

According to iSpot, Shutterfly began airing 2020 national TV commercials on November 5, targeting millennials and Gen-X viewing shows such as Fear the Walking Dead, South Park, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, The First 48 and Live Rescue. Since that November 5 debut, the company has allocated approximately $1.8m toward this channel; this is the first time Shutterfly has invested in national TV since it spent approximately $3.5m in 2018.

So far this year, Pathmatics estimates the company has generated 2.1b digital impressions via Facebook (61%), desktop video (21%), desktop display (10%), Instagram (3%), mobile display (3%) and mobile video (2%) ads. YTD spend of around $15.8m marks a % decline from the roughly $17.6m spent in the same 2019 timeframe; Shutterfly's full 2019 spend of $24.6m only reached around half of its full 2018 spend of $43m.

Additionally, Magellan reports the company has aired six podcast ads within the past year.

Per Kantar data, Shutterfly started investing in radio media this year. It tends to largely target brides-to-be and their new partners, but this new ad campaign is relatable for anyone who's had a weird year (has anyone not?).
