Millennial Media Opps: Mars Petcare launches accelerator program to improve offering, increases spend

Mars Petcare, the pet food manufacturer known for brands like Pedigree, Sheba, Whiskas, Iams and Temptations, knows that the global pet care industry is expected to grow by $100bn to $202bn over the next six years. It also knows that it needs to capitalize on more than 10% of that market. Therefore, it launched a technology and data ventures program called Kinship.

Kinship finds and partners with pet industry startups, allowing them to leverage Mars Petcare's financial standing and data tools. In return, Mars Petcare gets another stream of revenue, learns about new petcare trends and gets more customer data.

The accelerator program has already invested in 20 startups, the most notable of which include Whistle Labs (fitbit for dogs, which Mars actually acquired in 2016), Wisdom Health (DNA testing for dogs) and Wild Earth (sustainable dog food business). As you may have been able to tell, these startups span a range of focuses that overlap with some of Mars Petcare's current offerings.

As a result, Mars Petcare will sometimes cross-promote the startups where such a strategy is relevant. For example, Kinship President Leonid Sudakov told The Drum that he plans to market Whistle Labs' Pet Insight Project in conjunction with Mars Petcare's veterinary hospitals (e.g., Banfield Pet Hospital and VCA) since the data could be relevant for the doctors.

These cross-promotions will likely be large marketing pushes since Mars Petcare wants to increase its portion of the petcare industry. Therefore, we should see spend increases under the promotions and partnerships. We should also see spend increases since Mars Petcare recently expanded its marketing team (please view shifts here).

Since Mars Petcare is likely to see spend increases with Kinship and the expanded marketing team, sellers with high reach among pet parents (the majority of which are millennials) should contact leadership. Those with high reach among Gen-Z may also be able to make a case since some of Mars Petcare's recent ads have gone after the generation. The company often spends the most during Q2 and Q3, which also acts as the brand's respective buying and planning periods.
