Male Gen-X, Millennial Media Opps: General Electric announces new tagline amid digital spend increases (Score 20)

Open women's tennis championship. The company is retiring the "Imagination at Work" slogan it introduced in 2001, making this only the second slogan change since 1979, when it introduced "We bring good things to life." In addition to the TV spot, GE placed a full-page ad in the New York Times. The announcement was originally scheduled for the 2020 Olympics, but the coronavirus outbreak pushed it back.

According to Adbeat's estimates, GE spent around $186k on digital display ads over the last 365 days, up 61% from $113.4k it spent in this channel during the 365 days prior. It placed 99% of these ads programmatically through Google Display Network onto sites such as space.com, forbes.com, nytimes.com, worldometers.info and latimes.com. It placed 1% of these as video ads through YouTube onto youtube.com.

iSpot reports GE spent around $1.1m on national TV ads YTD, a huge increase from $4.8k it spent in this channel during the same time period of 2019. Do not read too much into the disparity between YTD 2020 spend vs. the same time period of 2019 because GE seems to focus the majority of its TV dollars on one event per year. Full-year spend equaled $4.1m in 2019 and $18.6m in 2018. Spend was so high in 2018 because it spent $18.3m during the 2018 Winter Olympics. It placed ads this year during programming popular among male millennials and Gen-X such as "NBA Basketball," "2020 US Open Tennis," "MLB Baseball," "Squawk Box" and "Live from the US Open."

Sellers-- GE seems to target mostly Gen-X and millennial men through digital display and national TV ads. It also invests in local OOH, print and radio ads, per Kantar. The company's TV spend has been rather sporadic over the last few years, making it hard to predict, but it has only spent a fraction in 2020 of what it normally spends. Digital spend has been on the rise, so reach out to this company to see what kind of ad space you can provide.

Agency & martech readers-- We believe GE currently works with Giant Spoon supplementing media, creative and digital work. There are no indicators of a review or GE expanding its roster at this time; I advise looking to other companies for work at this time.
