Male Media Opps: Tractor Supply sets sights on national marketing, westward expansion (Score 37)

During this week's Q4 earnings call, Tractor Supply CMO Steve Barbarick said that although the company has made "great strides" in the digital space over the last couple of years, there is still more opportunity for more momentum.

Barbarick added that TS' s rollout of its Buy Online Pickup In Store, in 900 stores, currently does not have national advertising. Instead, the company's only marketing was on its website and inside stores. However, this is all getting ready to change.

Barbarick stated that "by mid-next year or mid-this year," TS will have a fully functional, chain-wide Buy Online and Pickup In Store tool rolled out. At that point, national advertising will pickup in support of the option. CFO Anthony Crudele, who is retiring in March, also added that the company invested in additional marketing throughout Q4, so look for these increases to continue in general. This is especially true since TS has been focusing on enhancing customer experience.

Over the past year, TS has been "taking traditional marketing and moving it into the digital space," said Barbarick. He admitted the transition has been slow, but it is occurring. For example, TS increased the distribution of circulars in Q4, as it recognizes that its customers read newspapers. However, the digital evolution will continue in 2017.

TS is currently the largest retail farm, ranch and outdoor chain in the US, so sellers who can get the company's offerings in front of their male dominated audience should reach out to secure digital dollars.

TS is also planning to open approximately 100 new stores this year, 45% of which will be opened in the first half of the year (H1). Additionally, TS is continuing the transitioning Del's stores as part of its Tractor Supply Western expansion plans. TS also owns the Petsense chain, which serves pet owners in smaller communities. For 2017, there are plans to grow the store base by 25-to-30 stores, so local sellers should be focusing on this chain, as well. Petsense will also add a digital component at "some point" in order to broaden its offerings to small-town pet customers.

According to Winmo, Crawl tie-in. There's no way they could ignore that hilarity.
