Gen-Z, Millennial Media Opps: Smithfield Foods announces new leadership (Score 64)

According to iSpot, SF spent around $191.1k on national TV ads in 2020, a drastic increase from $55.3k spent in this channel during 2019. In 2020, it placed ads during programming such as "Celebrating the State Farm Slam Dunk and 3-Point Championships," "The 2020 James Beard Awards" and "All-Star Football Challenge." 

Per Pathmatics, SF earned 781m impressions through Instagram ads (37%), desktop video ads (36%), Facebook ads (16%), desktop display ads (8%) and mobile display ads (2%). It placed the majority (71%) of these ads site direct onto sites such as,,, and It placed the remainder through a variety of indirect channels onto sites such as,,, and It spent around $5.4m on digital display ads in 2020, a 93% increase from the $2.8m spent in 2019. 

Sellers-- SF targets a broad range of consumers but seems to have a slight male skew. It also likely targets millennial and Gen-Z women, as moms are typically a family's primary shopper. The company placed a high percentage of its digital ads onto Instagram, which leads me to believe the target audience may lean a little bit younger. It increased ad spend considerably in 2020, which I expect to continue under the newly promoted leaders. It also invests in OOH, radio and local broadcast TV ads, per Kantar. Sellers should reach out offering appropriate ad space. 

Agency & martech readers-- We believe SF currently works media buying and planning AOR Mindshare. New marketing leaders commonly review their company's agency roster; although, promoted DMs are much less likely than new hires. Start reaching out to France soon to be considered to win some of this company's business.
