Pet Parent eCommerce Opps: PetMed Express increases marketing spend amid sales growth

PetMeds Express (also known as 1800PetMeds) fiscal Q1, ended on June 30, 2020, sales grew by 20% from $80m in 2019 to $96.2m in 2020, per its recent earnings call. This growth is due to increased demand for flea, tick and heartworm medications during the spring and summer months. It also increased advertising spend for the quarter by approximately 5% from $8.6m to $9m. The company is committed to continuing higher ad spend and plans to redesign the website and mobile app in the near future.

According to Adbeat's estimates, out of the $2.1m PetMed spent on digital display ads since July 2018, it spent the majority of that ($1.9m) after July 2019. It placed 98% of these ads programmatically through Google Display & Video 360 onto sites such as,,, and It placed 2% of these ads site direct onto sites such as,,, and

Per during the same time period of 2019. Full-year spend totaled $3.8m in 2019 as it did not air any ads after H1; it only spent $501.7k in 2018.

Sellers-- Between increased sales and heightened marketing spend, there should be more ad dollars out there for you all to secure. PetMed will only air national TV ads through August, so reach out soon to secure last-minute ad dollars. It has increased digital display spend considerably, indicating it is targeting millennials and Gen-Z more aggressively.

Agency & martech readers-- PetMed has an in-house media team and Eicoff takes care of digital work. Nothing points to a review at this time; look for other opportunities for now.
