Campaign Imminent: American Cancer Society hires new creative AOR (Score 32)


Organization: American Cancer Society, a national voluntary healthcare system based out of Atlanta, GA, that offers cancer research, prevention, patient support and detection/treatment.

With a new campaign on the way, traditional and digital sellers should start going after these dollars. The Richards Group’s first work for ACS is expected to debut lin ate summer or fall  But also center your pitch on the winter holiday period, when nonprofit advertising tends to be up to reach people when they're in more of a giving mood. 

Furthermore, agencies, don't forget that media reviews typically follow creative and vice versa, so media agencies with non-profit experience should consider engaging decision makers to be top of mind should a media review occur.

Media Spend: According to Kantar Media, the American Cancer Society spent around $35 million on measured media in 2015, and about $15 million for the first three quarters 2016. The majority of spending went towards broadcast. 

TV Breakdown: For all of last year, the American Cancer society spent $22.1 million on national TV ads, up from the $19 million spent in 2015,

Digital Breakdown: Pathmatics reports that the American Cancer society spent $5.3 million on digital display spend in 2016, up from the $2.3 million spent in 2015. For all of last year, of the $5.3 million spent, the majority ($4.4 million) went towards desktop video, followed by $675,000 spent on desktop ads, $179,000 on mobile video and $69,000 on mobile. The ads were placed 87% site direct, 7% ad network, 4% trading desk and 1% unknown, on top ad destinations youtube.com, rollingstone.com, aol.com and rawstory.com. 

In comparison, so far this year, the organization spent $28,000 on 28 display ads, $24,000 on desktop ads and $4000 on mobile. The ads have culminated 11.2 million impression thus far, and have been placed 17% site direct, 6% ad network and the remaining 77% is unknown. Top ad destinations include tripod.com, angelfire.com and tapinto.net.
