Male Media Opps: Apollo Global Management acquires Yahoo & AOL from Verizon

Apollo Global Management for a reported $5b. Verizon purchased AOL in 2015 for around $4.4b and Yahoo in 2017 for about $4.5b. Verizon will retain 10% stake in the new company, which will be rebranded to Yahoo. Additionally, Verizon CEO Guru Growrappan will continue leading the new company. The deal is expected to close some time in H2.

Per iSpot, Yahoo Sports sports spent around $181.9k on national TV ads in 2020 during programming such as "NASCAR Cup Series," "2020 Indianapolis 500," "NHL Hockey," "IndyCar Racing" and "IndyCar Series Pre-Race. It spent approximately $1m in this channel during 2019.

Please view our digital display spend chart, courtesy of Pathmatics, for AOL and Yahoo, here.

Sellers-- Yahoo and AOL have a broad target audience that seems to focus on Gen-X and millennial men. Both heavily invest in digital display ads, and Yahoo utilizes national TV ads from time to time. Per Kantar, AOL and Yahoo both also invest in OOH, print and local broadcast ads. Sellers should start contacting the newly formed company as it could increase spend or launch a rebrand campaign. I do not expect to see any drastic changes to either of these brands marketing strategies, considering Growrappan will still be the CEO.

Agency & martech readers-- I believe AOL is currently working with Macquarium (digital). Start reaching out to the new company to see if you can pick up any of its business.
