Gen-Z, Millennial Parents Opps: Five Below continues digital shift amid social media initiative


Five Below (FB) started reopening its retail locations after the global pandemic caused temporary closures; as of June 9, 2020, 90% are open. The company continues to enhance its eCommerce channel and promoting curbside pickup. In FB's Q1 2020 earnings call, execs disclosed that its eCommerce sales grew over 4x YOY; however, this increase moderated as stores reopened. For now, it is "working on digital marketing strategies to retain both new and existing customers to drive traffic and sales across all channels."

Additionally, FB substantially shifted its marketing strategy to focus on digital advertising rather than TV or print; zip code data gives digital advertising the ability to offer flexibility and localization. Its social media accounts have trended with #HomeWithFiveBelow, which offers ideas for activities during shelter-at-home restrictions.

According to

iSpot reports the company has not aired a national TV ad YTD, but it normally waits until H2 to allocate funds to this channel. Full year spend totaled $656.7k in 2019 and $263.5k in 2018. It mainly targeted Gen-X and millennial moms in 2019. 

FB's usage of #HomeWithFiveBelow not only gained social media attention and conversation that drew users toward FB, but it also likely affected sales since it inspired viewers to shop online for the toys featured in different activities. Since the increase in digital spend isn't reflected in digital display, we assume it's focusing on other digital channels such as paid social and/or OTT. Remember we may see the company return to national TV later this month.

FB tends to target Gen-Z and millennial parents; its spend rises during the summer (Q2-Q3), back-to-school (BTS - Q3) and holiday (Q4) seasons.
