Gen-Z Millennial Opps Update: Alkaline Water taps CMO as spend continues increasing (Score 84)

Update: has already concluded the CMO search that began last month (more below) with the hire of Tom Hutchison. Hutchison most recently served as Sprouts's marketing and customer engagement VP; he was also the company's interim co-CMO for a year. Now, he will oversee the development and implementation of AW's marketing strategies. This will reportedly include "exciting" new marketing campaigns and product collaborations with influencers such as Shaquille O'Neal.

Sellers should contact soon to secure last-minute ad dollars for the upcoming campaign. Right now, AW is targeting Gen-Z through paid social channels and millennials through traditional media channels such as radio, print and OOH. The company additionally targets potential distribution partners.

Alkaline Water (AW) is in search of its first-ever CMO to support its rapid growth and work with world-renowned brand ambassador Shaquille O'Neal. The new marketer's responsibilities will also include developing a brand strategy and marketing plan, along with building its marketing team from the ground up.

So far this year, Pathmatics reports AW has spent roughly $54k on digital ads; it did not utilize this channel within the same 2020 timeframe. The company's estimated full-year spend of 2020 reached $98.9k, surpassing that of $2.5k in 2019 by far. AW has earned around 9.3m digital impressions YTD via Instagram (48%), Twitter (31%) and Facebook (21%) ads.

This surge in digital spend and reliance on paid social channels show that AW's traditional target demographic of better-for-you (BFY) consumers currently consists primarily of Gen-Z. To reach this audience even more effectively, the company may also invest in OTT and/or podcast, especially under a new CMO. AW also began, relatively recently, utilizing traditional media channels as well; these include radio, print and OOH. This signals it's also trying to reach millennials. Finally, AW tends to target potential retail distribution partners such as grocery stores. It's especially focused on growing its brick-and-mortar presence in the NE, along with stores in CA, AZ, TX and the East Coast.
