B2B Media Opps: VMware hires CMO, focuses on cloud & remote workplace services (Score 71)


Effective June 2020, VMware hired CMO Carol Carpenter to spearhead responsibilities such as corporate, segment and field marketing. She most recently served as Google Cloud's product marketing VP. VMware has been enhancing its cloud services, so this background will likely lead to a continuation of this focus shift. Carpenter seems to have replaced Robin Matlock, the company's incumbent CMO of seven years.

In order to boost these cloud-related efforts, VMware also hired cloud marketing VP Vittorio Viarengo, formerly McAfee's interim CMO, in April 2020. Carpenter also joins Sumit Dhawan, whom VMware promoted as chief customer officer in February 2020 from SVP and GM. Finally, in order to drive the company's digital workplace solutions, VMware hired Teresa Chen as a director of its digital workspace solutions marketing in May 2020.

VMware provides a digital foundation that powers apps, services and experiences via compute, cloud, mobility, networking and security services. Right now, it is promoting ways in which it can help companies enable remote workforces amid stay-at-home regulations caused by the global pandemic. According to CEO Pat Gelsinger, VMware's digital transformation is more important right now than ever; before the pandemic, only a few percentages of employees worked from home, but that number is now 97%. The company's execs want to help employers as much as VMware can, whether work-at-home life becomes their "new normal" or not.

According to

iSpot reports no national TV ad spend data for VMware, but parent company Dell spent around $16.5m in this channel YTD, a 34% increase from $12.3m during the same time period of 2019. Full-year spend equaled $41.2m in 2019 and $39.7m in 2018. It mainly targets Gen-Z and millennial men via this channel (see targeting right). 

It also utilizes local marketing methods such as OOH, search and print, and its overall media spend seems to be on the rise, according to Kantar data. VMware tends to target business DMs, especially those in search of cloud and/or remote workplace options. Its national TV targeting and slight uptick in digital display ad spend lead us to believe it's especially targeting Gen-Z and millennials; thus, you should also offer paid social ad space.
