Sports Fans Opps: Kansas City Chiefs search for CMO (Score 44)

The Kansas City Chiefs are searching for a CMO to spur growth at a local, regional and national level. The selected marketer will work with the senior executive team to build on the teams' recent popularity. The CMO will also utilize social media and the players' influence to continue building the organization's brand. The Chiefs hired content and production VP Rob Alberino in March 2021 from the San Francisco 49ers, where he served as VP and executive producer. In his new role, Alberino will produce all content and will be responsible for distribution across digital, social and over-the-top platforms. Keep an eye on the Chiefs as a new CMO will present opportunities for sellers, agencies and potential sponsors as well.

According to Adbeat, out of the $3.7k spent on digital display ads since March 2019, it only spent $484 (13%) in this channel after March 2020. It placed 100% of these ads programmatically through Google Display Network and Google Search Partners onto sites such as nfl.com, ebay.com, target.com, vikings.com and hindustantimes.com.

Sellers-- The Chiefs target a wide range of football enthusiasts mainly through digital display ads. It decreased spend in 2020, but that was likely due to the coronavirus pandemic. It spends the majority of its ad dollars during football season. Considering the team's plans to utilize social media, it is likely trying to reach millennials and Gen-Zers more effectively. Sellers should reach out once the team finds a CMO to see what types of ad space you may be able to provide.

Agency & martech readers-- The Chiefs work with Bernstein-Rein Advertising on creative, Trozzolo Communications Group on creative with an in-house team taking care of media. Pay close attention to this organization, and be prepared to pitch your services once it nails down a CMO.
