TV, Digital Opps: Groupon launches first holiday campaign amid ad hike

Company: Groupon, an online discount provider that features daily coupon offers in various cities around the US.

Opportunity: As part of its increased customer acquisition efforts in 2016 (more here), Groupon has debuted its first holiday TV campaign. The campaign will feature two spots - "Gift" and "Expereince." "Gift" will run up to Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend and will focus on the products found on Groupon Goods, while "Experience" will begin running on Cyber Monday through Christmas.

"Experience" will focus on giving the gift of local experience. Both spots will air in :15- and :30-second formats on networks such as ABC, Fox, NBC, Bravo, Comedy Central, E!, Food Network, HGTV, Lifetime, TLC and USA. Per here.

Sellers - there's a possibility you could pick up last minute dollars, but it sounds as if the holiday campaign is planned out. Therefore, look a little further down the road to 2017 for digital and TV dollars, especially those targeted to millennial females, those with and without families.

National TV Spend: For 2016 so far, iSpot reports that Groupon has spent $25.3 million on five national TV spots. All five of these spots have run since June (see chart for show targeting). Note that these are Groupon's first TV ads since 2011, and no money was spent on the channel in 2015.

Digital Breakdown: Per Pathmatics, Groupon has spent a total of $1.4 million on digital ads this year (163.5 million impressions). Spend was allocated to online video (64%), desktop (32%) and mobile (4%) ads. See chart for impression source breakdown for 2016. Top ad destinations include: youtube.com, conservativetribune.com, newsmax.com, westernjournalism.com and muscleandfitness.com.

For the same period 2015, Groupon's total digital spend was only $403,000 - meaning 2016's spend is up 247% from last year.
